 Our Story

Austin Solar Company Meridian Energy Systems, Inc. was founded in 1999 by Andrew McCalla. Andrew's interest in renewable energy was piqued way back in the summer of '92, when a visit to Rio coincided with two major events, an Earth Summit and a Global Forum. Andrew was inspired by the renewable energy efforts underway in some of the more progressive countries, and soon thereafter enrolled in Solar Energy International (SEI). His first practical experience was at a solar design and distribution company in Houston. Those four years proved pivotal, as Andrew gained crucial experience from time "in the trenches" and left with one major insight: we can do better. Everyone was talking about energy conservation, but Andrew saw the potential in making conservation an inherent part of the generation process. In other words, it's all about efficiency. You don't cut corners, you plan things thoroughly, and solar energy systems become an even more viable option.
 
A 7th-generation Austinite, Andrew headed back home in 1999 and started Meridian in his grandmother's garage, specializing in renewable energy systems of the highest quality. It didn't hold the company for long, though, and once the country survived the chaos following the Y2K global computer meltdown (ahem), Meridian began its steady growth. Austin proved to be the ideal home, with a progressive, environmentally conscious vibe that's been part of its culture since the 60's. Austin Energy's generous rebate program doesn't hurt, either.
 
Meridian has since become Meridian Solar to better reflect our specialized knowledge and skills in solar electric systems. We have developed relationships with all the major suppliers, getting only the best components for every installation. After hundreds of installations over the last decade—including two of the largest installations in the state—Meridian is truly Texas' solar electric design and installation company.
