Everybody has that friend. The one who, despite constant ridicule, never seems to get with the times and let something go. We’ve all been there, hell maybe some of us have been that friend. I have. For some reason, in eighth grade I felt that hair highlighting was still a thing. It took some serious convincing that I was wrong. Apparently, the Justin Timberlake look went extinct a few years before. Who knew?

Well, my roommate is one of these guys. He’s the friend who will not stop buying plastic water bottles. He uses them for his Crystal Light. I won’t even get into the issues surrounding a 23 year old guy having a Crystal Light addiction. I’m pretty sure those things have a daily serving of estrogen infused in them. But nonetheless, he brings pallets of them home from the grocery and uses them almost exclusively, despite us having a Brita water filter. A Brita! When I told my dad I needed a Brita for college he laughed in my face. In his day, it was tap. But that’s beside the point.

So, my anonymous friend buys plastic water bottles routinely and litters our house with them. Just living next to them is upsetting to me, and I’m not even the radical one in the house. My other roommate once gathered them up and put them in his bed, like the scene in the The Godfather where Don Corleone puts a severed horse’s head in that snitch’s bed, but more intimidating.

The effects of bottled water on the environment are troubling. Don’t believe me? This website lists a few facts on the subject. The one that stands out to me is the fact that plastic water bottles take over 1,000 years to bio-degrade, and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes. 1,000 years! Man-made plastics have only been around for about 150 years, so those historic plastics aren’t even 20% done degrading!

So we need to do our part as residents of Earth to reduce plastic consumption, and its not something that’s terribly difficult. Carry a canteen, drink from the tap, and if you do have to use a plastic water bottle, recycle it.

Do your part to not be that friend.
