Hornsby Bend Birding Shelter
Project #: 120
System Power Rating:.3 kW
Location: Austin, TX

Built during 1999-2000, the Hornsby Bend Birding Shelter was constructed out of light clay to serve as an example of alternative building concepts and is situated to take advantage of unobstructed views of a premier birding location and prevailing winds. As the building is completely "off the grid", users rely regularly on stored rainwater and solar power. The array, which was installed by one of the third annual Solar Energy International Austin workshop, provides power to run lights at night, and an occasional laptop computer for researchers. Future users may include a web cam for remote birding.
