Bracken Cave
Project#: 193
System Power Rating: 50 Watts Location: Bracken, TX

Meridian was approached by Eagle Scout Corwin Ames who had a design concept for a trail lighting system at Bat Conservation International's Bracken Cave. The 600' long cave, formed by rainwater entering fractures over the past 1 million years, is the seasonal home to over 20 Million Mexican Freetail Bats- The largest aggregation of mammals on earth! Because there are so many bats, twilight emergences for feeding can last hours into the night, which left people who arrived at the cave entrance at dusk to study the bats with a dark path leading back to their cars. This system casts enough light on the path so that visitors can find their way back safely to the parking lot, but not so bright as to alarm the bats. Meridian worked closely with Corwin to finalize lamp selection, system design, and ultimately, installation. Installed in one day with the help of 8 Eagle Scouts, the solar panel was donated by Evergreen Solar, and the balance of materials by Meridian and San Antonio community members.
